Workship Presentation: The Recession and Export Trends in Washington State

  • (June 2009) It is well known that Washington leads all other U.S. states in exporting in terms of the ratio of exports to total shipments. Therefore the impact of the recession beginning in December 2007 may be acute in Washington. By examining recent export trends, I argue that due to the product mix of Washington exporters, looking at aggregate export data is not a useful measure of economic conditions. I further argue the impacts of recession on exports will not be statistically different than the impacts on shipments. Therefore exporters are neither in a better position nor a worse position than non-exporters.
