Italy Abroad
February 5 - April 30, 2009
Course Objectives
We integrate key concepts in economics with elements of political science, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and biology to provide insight into several environmental issues of global importance. This interdisciplinary approach will encourage analyses of these issues from many different perspectives. Case studies will be used as a mechanism for bringing the disciplines together.
The primary academic goals of this course are to:
- Increase appreciation for the way economics interacts with political science, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and biology to affect the policy, property rights assignment and management of environmental and natural resource issues.
- Improve critical thinking by identifying and using the multiple practical and disciplinary frameworks to address global environmental and natural resource issues.
- Strengthen verbal and written communication skills.
- Apply key social science concepts to specific global environmental and natural resource issues.
Students will investigate several specific environmental and natural resource issues including selected topics in forestry, water management, global warming and ozone depletion, marine fisheries, and biodiversity. EconS 430 will focus on issues of global environmental significance. Property rights and environmental economics will serve as the centerpiece for this course. By their nature, these issues are interdisciplinary, and a set of case studies will bring out these interdisciplinary dimensions.
Course Content: The class will use the ideas and concepts of property rights, open access resources, externalities and environmental ethics, to analyze cases in wildlife forests, fisheries, land use, air quality, and water. Classes will involve lectures, discussion and classroom activities. Readings will be assigned and must be completed prior to class.
