V. Lane Rawlins, a noted economist and academic leader, is the President Emeritus and Professor of Economic Sciences at Washington State University. In addition he serves as the Interim Director of the William D. Ruckelshaus Center, a joint effort of WSU and the University of Washington. His association with WSU started more than 40 years ago when he joined the Department of Economics faculty. He served as department chair and then as WSU's vice provost. He returned to WSU in 2000 and served as president for 7 years. Prior to that time he served nine years as president of the University of Memphis and before that as academic affairs vice chancellor of the University of Alabama System. Born in southeastern Idaho, Rawlins completed his bachelor's degree in economics at Brigham Young University in Utah and earned a doctoral degree in economics from the University of California Berkeley. He is the co-author of two books, has published widely, and has taught labor economics and the economics of education. He and his wife Mary Jo have three children and 11 grandchildren.
